A Friday Quickie

Shirt (Local Boutique, similar) - Jeans (Old Navy) - Flats (Target) - Triangle Necklace (F21)
Woo hoo, it's Friday!  And what a crazy Friday it is!
I've been so busy trying to coordinate and prepare everything for moving day - T minus 4 days!  Trust me, it could not come any sooner!
Plus, it has been so busy at work with different projects and additional responsiblities that came my way.  I guess it's good to be busy though, right?
Anyway, I thought I would do a quickie outfit post.  Here I am again with my uber comfortable leopard flats, also seen here.  I'm doing a lot of running around today so I wanted to be comfy!
I hope you all had an amazing week and have an even more amazing weekend!

How Pinteresting, You Say?

I started organizing my pins on Pinterest because they were just driving me crazy.  I thought I would share what I did because it really makes finding things so much easier.  Now, I don't have to go through all my pins on my "Baby" board to find what I'm looking for.

I broke down my pins from my baby board into different categories: Baby DIY, Nursery Inspirations, etc.  Then I started each board title with a "B" for baby.  So Baby DIY became "B_Baby DIY".  So all my DIY projects for baby would all be found here.

I proceeded to do this for everything that needed to be broken down into subcategories: B for Baby, C for Crafts, H for Home, etc.

I started with the Baby Board and I couldn't help but laugh at myself. Having been around babies and taking care of them pretty much my whole life, I thought I knew a lot about having a baby. Now that my little bundle of raspberries (she just learned to do raspberries and will not stop!) has arrived and I look through the things I pinned, I realized how naive I was. So, I thought I would share some of the pins that I actually kept and used!
I used the tutorial for burp cloths and bibs here and I am so glad that I did!  The bibs that I made are so much more absorbent than the store bought ones.  Not to mention they look nicer :)  I'm not a big fan of the bibs that have silly sayings on them.  I would rather opt for a cute pattern.
The burp cloths I made were a little larger than the ones in the tutorial.  I just didn't think they were big enough.  Now that Baby S is 5 months old, we have retired the burp cloths and switched to using receiving blankets because of the amount of spit-up.  But the burp cloths I made were so much better (and again, better looking) than the store bought ones.  The store bought ones were smaller and less absorbent.
I made some of my own receiving blankets also.  I got tired of seeing pink, animals, etc. so I wanted to pick my own patterns.  Plus, I was able to make them bigger so Baby S would be all snoodled - yes, it's a word :)  Now that she is bigger, the store bought blankets are a bit small.  For most of the blankets, I just sewed the edges to finish them.  To add a little bit of flair, I also used this tutorial to add crochet edging.  It was more difficult than I thought it would be, but it came out pretty nice.
I didn't nurse Baby S a lot in public; it just kind of wierded me out (go ahead, I know you're judging).  It doesn't wierd me out when other moms do it; I just, personally, felt so vulnerable.  When I did, I was so glad that I made this!  I used this tutorial to make a nursing cover.  I used a simple black knit fabric.  A lot of the nursing covers were so bright or looked like some kind of apron.  It just screamed to the world that you had a baby under there.  This was really simple to make and wasn't so "loud" - not to mention it was a whole lot cheaper than a store bought nursing covers.
And the final thing is this article about what happens after your give birth, here.  I was one of those pregnant women who read everything and anything about being pregnant and giving birth.  I even read about what happens after birth.  But oh my goodnes, it was still not what I expected.  I love how this post just puts it out there and I must say, it was pretty accurate.  I really wish that "What to Expect When You're Expecting" included MUCH more info about what happens after birth.  I mean, I knew I was still going to look pregnant after I gave birth, but I didn't know that my belly would literally feel like bread dough!  And the pain?! I thought the majority of it would be over after the baby arrived!
Of course I did all of these tutorials and reading before the baby came.  It's 5 month's later and I'm just getting into a routine that allows me to sew, craft, blog, etc. again.
For all you pregnany momma's out there.  Enjoy every minute of it because it really is one of the most precious and beautiful things that will happen in your lifetime!

What? No Selfie?

Dress (Old H&M, similar here) - Denim Vest (Urban Outfitters, similar here) - Neclace (F21)

It's weird to look at pictures of myself that aren't selfies!  Well, I am also awkwardly posed, but oh well.  I was over at my parents house this weekend and conned my brother into taking a couple pictures of my outfit.  He didn't mind, so that was pretty cool :)

This H&M leopard print dress is probably the most comfortable dress I own.  I bought it in Vegas about two years ago.  It even came in handy during my pregnancy.

I love how versatile it is. The back has some sheer detail (I'm so upset that I didn't photograph it, but you can see it if you click the link under the picture) so you can dress it up or down.

We were going to be in the car for a couple hours, driving from LA, so I paired the dress with a denim vest for a casual and comfy look.

How cute are these little munchkins?!  We went to LA this weekend to visit my sister and her cute little family!  Baby S got to spend time with her cousin and he couldn't stop making her laugh!  She started doing raspberries over the past couple of weeks.  When her cousin saw her doing it, he just couldn't help himself.  So they were both doing raspberries and it was just the cutest thing ever!

My Eats: Healthy Stuffed Bell Peppers

When I'm in need of a quick and filling recipe for dinner, this is my go-to! The picture above is of HoneyB's bell pepper, hence all the cheese. I do have to admit, it was the best looking one. Yum!
  • 5 medium bell peppers - I mix yellow, orange, red and green for fun =)
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 pounds extra-lean ground turkey
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1/4 teaspook paprika
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice
  • 2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 package (7 ounces) shredded low-fat cheddar cheese
  • Chopped green onion for serving

  • Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a pan, pour the oil and saute the onion until softened.
  • Add the turkey, cumin, garlic, salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring and breaking up the ground turkey until cooked through.
  • After the meat is cooked, transfer to a bowl and mix with the brown rice and tomatoes.
  • Cut the tops off the bell peppers and hollow out by removing the seeds and core.
  • Spoon the meat and rice mixture into the hollowed out bell peppers.
  • Place stuffed peppers on baking sheet and cook in oven for 20-25 minutes, until peppers are tender.
  • Remove from over, top with shredded cheese and cook for 3 minutes or until cheese is melted.

    My Birthday Weekend

My 27th birthday was on Friday, March 15, 2013.  I worked an entire day.  And during that day, I kept writing 03/15/86 on everything.  Yes, I'm serious.  I almost gave something to a client with that date written on it.  Thankfully, I caught it as I was giving it to them.
Following the 9 to 5, I went to a wonderful dinner with my family.  Side note: during the last half of my pregnancy, I could not stand the sight of chicken or eggs.  Until this day, I am very picky about how chicken and eggs are prepared.  Fast forward to this weekend, I wanted to go to an old fashion steakhouse.  So since my regular spot had no reservations open until 8:30 p.m. (Which when you have a 4 month old baby, might as well be 2:00 a.m.), we decided to go to The Elephant Bar for the first time.  We had the quick seared ahi and fried green beans appetizers.  They were so amazing that I forgot to take photos.  So this is what was left...

I had the rib eye cooked medium rare, with grilled prawns and mashed potatoes.  It was pretty dark in the restaurant so it was difficult to photograph, but it was delicious!  The steak was cooked perfectly and the potatoes were actually really light and not loaded with butter and cream.

On Saturday, I spent the day with my family again.  If you don't already know, we are moving into our condo in the next week or so!  Trust me, it could not come soon enough!  So we went appliance shopping, had some lunch and looked for some nursery furniture.

My dad steamed some crab for dinner - poor little guy!

And what would dinner be without a glass of wine :)

HoneyB asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday.  I said my perfect birthday would consist of staying in with take-out, pajamas and our little baby.  I proceeded to frown, since I knew there was no way this could happen.  So since we don't have our own place right now, he took me to a hotel in downtown San Diego for the night!  It was the most thoughtful present I could have received.  So he took work off on Sunday and we spent the day walking around Seaport Village, checked into the hotel and had my perfect night :)  I'm new to this blogging thing and I was having such a surreal experience that I forgot to take a lot of photos!  I'm totally kicking myself right now.

This was definitely one of the best birthday's I've had and I feel so blessed!  So cheers to 27 :)

    Off to Bloglovin' We Go...

So I'm sure you've read the heart wrenching news that Google is getting rid of Google Reader.  I've read that this may or may not remove GFC (Google Friend Connect).  I'm very disappointed because being a new blogger, I really enjoyed having everything in one user-friendly place.  Don't get me wrong, I love using Bloglovin'; I actually think it has a more fresh/clean look, but it was so easy to have everything in Google.  So anyway, off to Bloglovin' we go.  I know I only have a handful of followers here and I really appreciate you guys and hope that you'll follow me over at Bloglovin'.  It's as easy as clicking the button below :)  See you all there!

If I were a rich girl...

Howdy, everyone! This blog post is inspired by Andrea from Mostly Happenstance. She left a comment on my blog and I stumbled accross a post of hers that was about what she would do/have if she were a rich girl. We then got to talking about how we "window" shop online and then ta-da! I decided to do my own "If I were a rich girl..." post.

If I were a rich girl...
I love the color blocked blazer trend, but so far, I haven't found one that I and my wallet like.  The less expensive ones that I've tried on look "cheapy".  So I would want to spring for this Sass & Bride colorblocked blazer for $550.00, cute shorts and heels.  I can never have enough structured blazers, it's just so Victoria Beckam, I think.  And the cut of this one makes it oh so feminine and girly.
Another Spring item I would want to splurge on is a bright/neon blazer.  I see them everywhere, but again, the more budget-friendly ones that I've seen don't look that great on me.  I love the cut of this Alive + Olivia blazer for $898.00.  I've seen in paired a lot with flare denim and wedges for a chic casual look.
I love everything Tory Burch.  The Tory Burch Robinson tote for $575.00 is no different.  It's actually pretty versitile and can we worn with a dress or more casual outfit.  It can actually be paired with either of the outfits above.  So, in the end, it might be a good inverstment.
If you have know where I can get comparable pieces, please share!

    Leopard, Mint & Studs

So am I the only one that has thought, for a long time, that leopard has been the new black?  I just scored these leopard stud flats at Target for $19.99!  I've been needing a new pair of leopard flats since I wore out my last pair.  The studs on these give it a little more of an edge, which works perfectly with a delicate light color like mint.  I threw on a black top and a statement necklace and called it a day.  What do you think of leopard?

    10 Little Things...

What better way to start off the week than with a little earthqake in Southern California!  Good morning to you too, world!

I've been pining about how to open up on my blog and make it a more personal creative outlet for me.  What better way that to just blurt out things about myself?
    1. I used to dye my hair so much that I didn't know what my natural hair color was anymore.  Now, I can't remember the last time I dyed my hair and it is all natural.
    2. I have a mild nail polish addiction.
    3. I've lived on my own since I was 17.
    4. HoneyB and I went to high school together, but never dated.
    5. Whenever I'm a little down or just bored, I search "cavachon puppies" on YouTube and it always lifts my spirits.
    6. I still play Super Mario Brothers, but now I play it on Nintendo Wii.
    7. I played the clarinet in middle school.
    8. "Friends" is my all-time favorite TV show.
    9. I didn't have cable TV until college.
    10. My favorite rainy day snack - rocky road ice cream with milk poured in the bowl.
There you go, 10 random things about me!

    Life by Rikki in Photos

This is for #tbt.  This was from Father's Day a few years back.  Before the life of marriage and babies fell on my sister and me.  I miss my short hair...I can't wait to lose the rest of my baby weight so that I can consider chopping this mane off.
I have no idea why I have not made Kale Chips sooner!  I made these for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I am in love, people!! I just used sea salt and olive oil, but they were amazing.  This is my new favorite snack. I love how you can add pretty much anything: parmesan cheese, seasoned salt, garlic powder, etc. Here's the simple recipe I used:

    1 bunch of organic kale
    1 tsp. olive oil
    sea salt

Wash and chop kale in bite size pieces.
Dry kale as much as possible using paper towels or a salad spinner.  I just let them dry overnight in the fridge.
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a bowl, combine kale, olive oil and sprinkle sea salt (salt goes a long way on these, so I used it sparingly).
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Spead the kale out on the cookie sheet and bake until brown, about 10-15 minutes.

I hope you love this as much as I do!
Work has me going insane lately!  I have a few projects that I'm staying on top of, so my blog posts have kind of been far and in between.

I have to paint my nails like a robber waiting in the shadows of the night, haha.  I have to wait until the middle of the night when baby S is asleep to paint my nails.  It's pretty much the only time that I don't risk messing up fresh paint.  I decided that I needed some fresh paint on my nails and something to put me in the mood for Spring, so I opted for OPI Lucky Lucky Lavender.
HoneyB and I had a long overdue date night last night.  The last time we went out together was Valentine's Day.  Anyway, we had a quick sushi dinner at our usual neighborhood spot.  I've had a hankering for sushi for who knows how long!  We were supposed to go on Valentine's Day, but all our plans got ruined :( Yes, maybe I'm still bitter, lol.  I will stay away from the crab mixture, heavy sauces and tempura/fried pieces because they are just loaded with calories and fat that I don't need.  But, leave it up to the hubster to order the "good" stuff so I end up having a bite...or two :P
Now, Life by Rikki would not be complete without this little lady right here!  Here she is in her Juicy Couture outfit gifted by her auntie & uncle :)
And let's finish it off with a shameless selfie in the car, sporting my new sunglasses and lipstick ;P

    Everday Make-up

    Everday Make-up

Everday Make-up by lifebyrikki featuring a black mascara

I love reading beauty blogs and discovering new products to try. If you go into my make-up drawer, you'll find something at every price point. I mix high/mid-end and drugstore make-up all the time.  What's important to me is the quality of the product and how much I like it.

I thought I would share my simple, everyday make-up with all of you.  It's just a few product that I keep in my make-up bag so I can throw my face on at a moments notice :)

I'm relatively new to the concealer scene.  I used to use concealer in college, then just kind drifted away from it.  These days, there's no missing it.  It definitely makes a difference for me.  Back in the day, I used Revlon Colorstay.  I tried it recently and it just seemed to dry out my eye area.  No bueno, for creasing and eventual wrinkles (ahhh!!!).  So after reading some trusty beauty blog reviews, I decided to try the Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer.  It goes on smooth, doesn't crease, lasts an entire work day and still feels nourishing.  I just swipe some on under my eyes and around my nose - a little goes a long way.

    Powder Foundation
I used to use MAC Studio Fix; I loved the coverage and smooth finish.  But after while, I got tired of the way it looked like I was wearing make-up.  So I was in search of something with a more natural finish.  I went to Ulta to try Bare Escentuals when the sales lady showed me the PUR Minerals 4-in-1 Powder Foundation.  PUR Minerals matched my skin tone a little better and I could not resist the fact that you could "build" coverage by the way you swiped your brush or the type of brush you use.  I was sold!

If there are two (2) pieces of make-up that I can't live without, they have to be bronzer and mascara.  I've been using Urban Decay Baked since I can remember.  It stays on, goes on smooth and isn't orange-y.  I like to use it more for just contouring my face.  Since I have chubby cheeks, I contour my facial structure using bronzer just under my cheekbones.

    Brow Kit
I define my brows by filling them in with the Bobbi Brown Light Brown Brow Kit.

There are many nude shadow pallets that I really like; Urban Decay Naked, Too Faced Natural Eyes, etc.  But my favorite one to keep in my purse is the Bare Escentuals Eyeshadow Duo in The Promise.  It only has two (2) colors and it's easy to just swipe on.  It has a built in mirror and is small enough to pretty much carry anywhere. The two (2) colors are perfect - one all over color and a soft brown to define the crease of your lid.

I use MAC eyeliner in Coffee with pretty much every make-up look.  But in this case, I just use it to line the outer corner of my eyes to add a little definition and shape.

I finish off by curling my eyelashes and putting on Maybelline Colossal Volume Mascara.  I've tried all sorts of brands of mascara and this one gets the job done and is very inexpensive.  It doesn't clump and the formula isn't extra thick like other volumizing mascaras.

There you go!  I hope you enjoyed reading :) What are your go-to products?

    A Little Bit of Leopard

    Cardigan:  Forever 21
    Black Leggings:  Cotton On
    Leopard Scarf:  H & M
    Boots:  Cio Bella
    Get the Look:
I've been extra sleep deprived lately because by little bundle of sweetness has decided that she wants to eat more at night.  I've pretty much been walking around like a zombie.
I've been a firm believer throughout my pregnancy and being a new mom, that my appearance doesn't need to suffer because of this new stage in my life.  So I try, the key word being "try", to put myself together every morning so that I look somewhat human :)
My go-to outfit lately has been all black with different sweaters and accessories.  It's just easy to throw on, but still feel put together.

What is your go-to outfit when you are in a hurry?
